FDA Authorizes Updated Covid Booster Shots, Targeting Omicron Subvariants (nytimes.com) 189

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized the first redesign of coronavirus vaccines since they were rolled out in late 2020, setting up millions of Americans to receive new booster doses targeting Omicron subvariants as soon as next week. From a report: The agency cleared two options aimed at the BA.5 variant of Omicron that is now dominant: one made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech for use in people as young as 12, and the other by Moderna, for those 18 and older. The doses can be given at least two months since people last received a booster dose or completed their initial series of vaccinations.

Biden administration officials have argued that even as researchers work to understand how protective the new shots might be, inoculating Americans again in the coming weeks could help curb the persistently high number of infections and deaths. "As we head into fall and begin to spend more time indoors, we strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to consider receiving a booster dose," Dr. Robert M. Califf, the F.D.A. commissioner, said in a statement on Wednesday. He added that the vaccine would "provide better protection against currently circulating variants."

Will it give me better 5G reception?
    • Why does that stupid rumor persist? How can anyone think they will be tracked by big companies and the govt for FREE? You have to pay good money, to buy, and more for a service contract to carry around a device that tracks you.

I'm sure that when implanted tracking chip technology becomes available, people will pay good money to have the chips implanted.
      • Probably because some crackpot published the schematic of the 5G chip that's in the vaccine. [popularmechanics.com]

And there are people who believe Biden is not the president. And that Trump won the election. And that the Earth is flat. And we never went to the moon. And that you don't need a driver's license to drive. Or you can say some magic incantations and legally get out of paying taxes, cr

      Duh, that's what "booster" means.
  • CDC has said studies show previous boosters wane in effectiveness against hospitalization and death after 4 months, which equated to needing them 3 times per year. Will this new booster be needed less often given it's more targeted to the current strain?
  • Apparently the FDA is using mouse testing, not human testing, for approval...which is how they do flu vaccines.

I suppose we'll see if COVID is like the flu when it comes to the safety of the approval process.

    • Considering this is Pfizer and Moderna this is part of the appeal and promise of mRNA; 99% of this new vaccine should be the same as the old ones since it is mostly stabilizers and delivery mechanisms like the lipid nano-particles and they can just tune the active portion to the new variant.

As we are seeing here through with this new capability the regulatory systems has to catch up with it.

    • Efficacy testing is almost always done in an animal model for vaccines. Safety testing can use humans, but that's different.
  • Why we won't be taking the booster: My wife and I are not in a group that is at high risk of SARS Covid 2 doing much damage to us. We are pretty sure we got Alpha back in February 2020 but never got tested because tests did not exist. We got the vaccine when it was available to our age group in order to protect my mother in law who is immunocompromised. We did this because we, like everyone else, were told that the vaccine protected you from getting or transmitting SARS Covid 2 by a factor of %98. The rare
