Former astronaut Scott Kelly said he is ending his feud with the head of Russia's space program after the National Aeronautics and Space Administration asked former astronauts to dial down criticism of their Russian counterparts. From a report: The dustup began when Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin and other Russian government entities published a series of social-media posts, including one video showing Russian cosmonauts abandoning the International Space Station and leaving behind U.S. astronaut Mark Vande Hei. Mr. Kelly, who spent nearly a year in 2015 and 2016 aboard the ISS, got into a heated exchange on Twitter last week with the Russian space chief over the series of posts. Now Mr. Kelly said he is ending the spat with Mr. Rogozin after NASA sent an email to former astronauts asking them to stop criticizing their Russian partners because it was hurting the mission aboard the ISS, an orbiting lab where American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts work side by side. "I respect their position. They have a tough job. I believe in NASA and what they do. I want to help them. I respect the person that sent it greatly," Mr. Kelly said in an interview. "I would say that if I was in their position, I would have done the same exact thing."

    • I think it's a bit more complicated than attention pimping. If the news reports are true, the Russian space agency started the feud with their own highly unprofessional "joke" about marooning a US astronaut in orbit.

        The ISS is getting near end-of-life anyway. We'll just de-orbit it on our way home. On the Kremlin.</joke>

      I recently had the fortune of meeting Mr. Kelly while he was speaking. He's a great guy and usually tones down his political rhetoric. This is one of those rare exceptions. He understands that he is an ambassador for NASA, though the international ambassador was somewhat overlooked.

      Do I care? Yeah. He's a great guy who serves as an inspiration for many who want to get to space or attain anything big in life.

      Am I a nerd? Oh hell yes!

        Yeah he got cowed, and he knows it and so does everyone else. This is one of the very very few remaining areas where Russia enjoys a little international leverage.

        They do have the ability to f'up the ISS mission single handily. They probably *could* strand folks up there and leave us with few options but to watch the slowly unfolding tragedy...

        well this time anyway, if they did that they'd make it all but certain they won't be given the opportunity to be first class partner in an future international space

          To get astronauts of the ISS, Russia is not required. Even the boost of the ISS into higher orbit which is currently done by a Russian rocket stage does not need to be done by Russia either.

          So it was a joke in very poor standing, and all the bruha about 'astronauts being stranded' is just plain nonsense.

          But yes. It'll be hard for Russia to be credible in partnerships in the future, that's for sure.

          Bull shit - Musk could send up a crew dragon to bring them home within a week or two. There's no risk of a stranding for any length of time that would be "dangerous"

          LOL What the hell are you blathering about, Ivan? Russia barely has a space program, we're not going to use them for future launches, they're already leaving the ISS program as fast as their commitment allows.

          The only "space program" they have is what they have left over from the past, and given their current situation, they're at risk of losing the engineering ability even to continue to cannibalize that.

    Someone has to be a grown-up / professional and, after reading some of his Twitter posts, it's clearly never going to be Dmitry Rogozin ...

      It's hard to be a professional when Russia's space program is winding down indefinitely.

      He's probably trying to break into some sort of media role for his next job.

      The word they are looking for is revolution.

    • Correct. But it's important to get the context of Kelly's actions (in the summary). And nowhere does he suggest that all Russians be evil.

      Grudgingly or not, Kelly complied with NASA's request when he could have easily dug in, talk being cheap, unlike Putin and his war machine.

      • People only see their side, which is why people cannot understand Russians supporting the war. Russia sees the west as the enemy kind of the same as we see them but opposite and they have a lot of good evidence of the west doing things to Russia that are unjust and unfair. Basically Ukraine is seen as a tool of the west to move NATO closer to Russia (among other things.) This is like a poll of how many US citizens supported the US being in Iraq for the war under Bush Jr. I don't know how many but a lot. Eve

      The Russians will be partnering with the Chinese in the future of space. We will see satellite and junk battles (the border skirmishes of NEO) and national-industrial turf wars on the Moon.

      The Chinese will win.

  • Kelly was an astronaut, not some political science expert that understands all the ins and outs of geopolitical matters.
    Kelly was probably under the impression that Putin woke up on one day in February and decided to invade Ukraine.
    I can't blame Kelly for being indoctrinated by all these so-called independent objective media outlets like CNN and the WaPo.
    Living in the US or EU makes it difficult to escape the Western propaganda about this conflict unfortunately.

    • Pray tell, what is the Western propaganda about this war? You can come out with all the bad things that the USA is guilty of, but that's mere whataboutism. There is no way to turn this war into something righteous. It takes a stretch to understand it. I get it, a bully will always bully. It takes a lot more than just a stretch to come with the West could have prevented it. Fsck that! Thank $deity the Ukrainians aren't such pussies.

  • ISS is only money and WILL be deorbited one day so why not now? Everything Russian is a military asset.

    The US can fund its own space program. ISS was a despicably naive idea in the first place and anyone who believed cooperation with NeoSoviet Russia a good idea should be ashamed of themselves.

    There is more to life than one mere space station and the more we build the better we'll get.

    • The Russian module will be detached and de-orbited, but the ISS is going to get a commercial module to replace it and extend the life of the project.

      At a minimum until the commercial station is completed, and then it will just depend on demand. Likely there will be plenty of demand to support two stations.
