C.D.C. Recommends Covid Vaccine for Younger Children (nytimes.com) 215

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has formally endorsed the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children aged 5 through 11, a move that will buttress defenses against a possible surge as winter arrives and ease the worries of tens of millions of pandemic-weary parents. From a report: At a meeting earlier in the day, a panel of scientific advisers had unanimously recommended that the vaccine be given to these children. Inoculations could begin as soon as this week. "Together, with science leading the charge, we have taken another important step forward in our nation's fight against the virus that causes Covid-19," Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the C.D.C., said in a statement Tuesday night. The C.D.C.'s endorsement arrives just as Americans prepare for a potentially risky holiday season. Cases in the United States have been falling steadily for weeks, but experts have warned that indoor gatherings may send the rates soaring again. Many Americans seem determined to celebrate; already airlines are bracing for what may be the busiest travel season since the start of the pandemic.

  • But truth be told, this is at least six months later than it should have been, for no supportable reason at all. At considerable cost to health and lives.

  • I’ll be more than willing to get a vaccine for myself and my family once one is available.

  • Where is the data that shows that children are spreading the virus at some massive rate?

Just because we CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean we SHOULD do something.

The first shot will get you around 50 percent immunization over 8-10 days. Starting at 0 the first day. It's close to linear.

The second shot will get you around 90-98 percent immunization over 8-10 days. Starting at 50 the first day. It's also close to linear.

If you get vaccinated now, the second shot has a better result if you go to the longer end of the time window they give you. However, it means you have a longer period with less immunization.

So, get fully vaccinated - both shots (if you did the one shot, you do need a booster or second shot). Then WAIT until 8-10 days AFTER the second shot before doing social gatherings.

It's ok to wear masks - the vaccine does not protect you from COVID infections, it just boosts your immune system, so they only last 2-3 days (when you can spread the virus) and have much lower symptoms (since your immune system fights it more effectively). And causes you to avoid death and organ failure from COVID. Also, if you're wondering "does it matter if my kid gets vaccinated", ask your doctor to show you pictures of a kid's lungs who was vaccinated and who was not. It's not pleasant, but you'll understand why it's important.
