Trump Goes To Hospital After Testing Positive For COVID-19 (bbc.com) 279

President Donald Trump has been flown to the hospital less than 24 hours after testing positive for COVID-19. The BBC reports: The White House said the decision to transport him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was taken "out of an abundance of caution." Mr Trump began exhibiting "mild symptoms" of Covid-19 on Thursday. He said early on Friday he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive. The White House said he was feeling "fatigued but in good spirits."

Wearing a mask and suit, Mr Trump walked out across the White House lawn on Friday afternoon to his helicopter, Marine One, for the short trip to hospital. He waved and gave a thumbs-up to reporters but said nothing before boarding the aircraft. In a video posted to Twitter, Mr Trump said: "I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support. I'm going to Walter Reed hospital. I think I'm doing very well. But we're going to make sure that things work out. The first lady is doing very well. So thank you very much, I appreciate it, I will never forget it -- thank you."

Apparently, the appropriate reaction to "mild symptoms" is a helicopter ride to hospital and an experimental treatment [medicalxpress.com].

Yeah, In the UK Boris Johnson had mild symptoms and was perfectly fine, and he ended up in intensive care on oxygen (but not ventilator) for three days, with two weeks off work afterwards to recover, and then very very low level of visibility and work for a while after that.

He's off to hospital because the doctors are worried. As well they might be - in one day he has gone from 'symptom-less' to 'mild effects' to 'mild fever' to hospital.

It's likely still precautionary, but Trump, at 74, obese, and with what some might call dementia of some sort, has a high risk profile for the virus.

And earlier care will surely improve the outcome for him.

Yep, for sure. I understand the caution. I hope Trump recovers, but I also hope that he gets enough of a scare to realize that COVID-19 is serious and to stop spreading misinformation about it to his base.

Quite a lot of covid patients show up at the doctor with relatively mild symptoms, end up hospitalized for observation, then moved to intensive care all without 24 to 48 hours. The symptoms can go from mild to severe very quickly.

And Trump has three risk factors: older, obsese, and low-income.

    • Hey I'm pretty sure they'd do the same for you and me.

      They would .. right?

Wait is that a paddy wagon?

    • If the experimental treatment is working they'll probably let him do the entire 18 holes.

      • they'll probably let him do the entire 18 holes

But that's only a fraction of the number of women he has "allegedly" sexually assaulted - he is accustomed to more holes than 18. What will he do, grab them all by the pussy and treat them as bowling balls?

I hope the hospital has plenty of Hydroxychloroquine and "injectable" disinfectant for his treatment.

        • I do find it curious both he and Hicks have it. I've no doubt Melania would not care. The thing that triggered the thought was how Trump was saying the military and law enforcement want to hug and kiss you. No I don't think military and law enforcement wanted to hug and kiss him, but made me wonder if maybe he was hugging and kissing Hope,

I think they moved him to the hospital now because if he stayed at the WH but then got worse and had to go to the hospital in a few days there is no hiding that. If he goes right away and then maybe he stays a few days longer than expected they can lie about how serious it is.
      • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

I can't imagine Trump agreeing to go to hospital unless it was really serious.

He didn't tweet for over 24 hours either, suggesting it's really bad. When he finally did the wording didn't sound like him, more like a staffer, suggesting he may be incapacitated.

The real problem is that the Whitehouse is so untrustworthy we simply can't take their word for anything.

but it's worth repeting so I'm going to copy/pasta it here:

I am very worried about his condition. COVID has well documented effects on the brain. Sometimes even in minor cases, and his case doesn't seem minor (they flew him to Walter Reed, given how much medical gear is already at the WH that means he's in rough shape). He's also not tweeting...

I don't think he's getting out of this unscathed. Rather than affecting him for the better it might make him mentally unstable.

Since he's adverse to wearing a mask or any one around him wearing one, I wonder how many folks he infected? Masks are important for it's wearer but just so for other folks coming near a person not wearing one. I'm sure everyone who has come near him in the White House or elsewhere needs to be checked often.

That's the thing, they were checked often and he still got it. Likely because he and his circle couldn't be bothered to wear masks.

One thing to keep in mind is the rapid testing being done at the Whitehouse is poor compared to PCR testing.

As of 15 minutes ago, you can add Sen.Thom Thillis (R-NC) to the list. He announced he's got COVID-19 too. He was also at the Rose Garden ceremony announcing Trump's Supreme Court pick, which seems to have been something of a superspreader event.

    • In private, Trump is a germophobe. Rumor has it that he was angry at a white house valet who did NOT wear a mask when serving the him. On the other hand he is very chummy with a lot of people, so it's possible the germophobia does not apply to family, friends, or attractive aides.

  • Trump is scared as hell now

So he is happy to take the Regeneron polyclonal antibodies while prescribing just hydroxychloroquine and bleach for the rest of us? Why did he shove that hydroxychloroquine witch doctor on us in his tweet while getting treatment from real doctors? Why didn't he invite her to be his personal physician if she's so great enough for the rest of us?

Lots of people quite genuinely spout all sorts of bullshit until they're actually sick themselves, then they suddenly want the best possible treatment from people who are actually qualified to know what that is.

    • Trump has been promoting antibody-based therapies for COVID since at least the end of July [whitehouse.gov]. Why wouldn't he be taking his own advice?

  • sound serious judging from the last Tweet that looked like it was filmed in front of a green screen and had crazy reverb to the sound. Also for someone who doesn't listen to sane doctors he sure seems to be listening this time.

So then why is he and his staff wearing one now?

    Asking for a friend.

He let his right wing thugs push one narrative well he lives a different one.

He knows he needs the votes of anti-science people while he himself knows science works. He doesn't mind them spreading deadly falsehoods as long as he can win the election. How many vulnerable people got infected thanks to his mockery of masks and social distancing?
