True, it is a dupe, but not many people were interested in that article, perhaps they thought that it needed a wider audience. Or at least that not many people would notice. Personally, I love all things virus.

I would like to see a large discussion on duplicate story detection technology and algorithms. Obviously human-centric methods are not very effective.

The problem with that logic is as follows:
/. editors post duplicates, therefore they don't actually read /.
Since they don't read /., why would they see an article on duplicate detection algorithms?

As well, since it is commonly known that noone actualy reads the articles, why should the /. editors?

Between these two points, a discussion on dupe detection would be trite.

What disturbs me even worse than the fact that the article is a dupe is that one of timothy's links, here(2) [dawn.com], is an article on SARS, which is to the best of my knowledge completely unrelated to the mimivirus. Either there is a serious lack of editorial control or wild speculation.
