Science: Two New Monkey Species Discovered 15

Rio writes "Scientists working in Brazil's central Amazon have discovered two new monkey species that are about the size of small cats, according to a myCFnow.com story. "This once again demonstrates how little we know about biodiversity, these are the 37th and 38th new primate species described since 1990," said Conservation International's President Russell Mittermeier, a co-author of the scientific descriptions."

Science: Two New Monkey Species Discovered

  • Looks like ximain [ximian.org] has more monkey names to use.

I know all I need to know about biodiversity: if I can eat it (animal) or fuck it (human animal) or keep it as a housepet, great. If it ain't useful for any of that, I can't say it matters much...
  • I wonder if they plan to capture these monkeys and put them in zoos? I wonder if they can throw rocks as accurately as Hamadryas Baboons and Chimpanzees? Baboon Fracas! [uncoveror.com]
  • Slashdot trolls and first posters!
  • This demonstrates that while some species may be continuing to come closer to extinction, even the 'biodiversity' harpies don't have a complete grasp of the situation.

Often enough said hand-wringing is just another shakedown operation.
    • This finding doesn't demonstrate anything of value.

Science is about learning what we don't. I know a lot of conservative ignoramouses like to think that the "'biodiversity' harpies" and other biologists and scientists claim to know everything. Guess what, we don't! We can't know everything, and we don't. Anyone who claims that know anything 100% about the physical world isn't a real scientist.

Plenty of species are moving towards extinction. Discovering some we previously didn't know about doesn't mean that they're new, just popped up to replace gone ones.
      • you couldn't be more wrong. this finding demonstrates that there are many more species that we do not know about. i don't know of any "scientist" that claims to know everything. they wouldn't be a scientist if they knew everything. part of being a scientist is learning. you can't be one if you aren't. saying that 2 new species were found is incorrect. it should be 2 previously unknown species. yes, there are many species moving towards extinction, but that does not mean that they are extinct. that also does not mean that those "new" species we find replace gone ones. this finding shows us just how diverse the world is. biodiversity is good. what is wrong with this? what is not learned by this? the scientist is in brazil with a purpose to study and do research in the flood-plains of the amazon, perhaps one of hte most bio-diverse areas. he "discovered" 2 unknown species and named them. why do you find this to be not learning anything? every scientific finding is important in some way or another.
        • What are you trying to say here? Perhaps you meant to reply to my parent?

The fact that there are many species about which we know little or nothing has been demonstrated before. It's established and assumed.

i don't know of any "scientist" that claims to know everything. they wouldn't be a scientist if they knew everything. part of being a scientist is learning.

Indeed. That is what I said. Read before you reply. :) Go back and read my post, and my parents. I think I know what confused you. The post to which I replied was modded down, and probably below your threshhold, so you thought my post was a top-level reply. Go read it here [slashdot.org].

Is there a point to your restating and paraphrasing of what I said? Not trying to be a dick, just trying to figure out what you're trying to say.

Two *NEW* species? And I thought I exausted all my hot-monkey-sex options.

    Gotta go!

  • I won't be impressed until it can drum to the beat of Monkey Phonics [monkeyphonics.com] .
  • Awww.... they sound cute. I just wish they'd show pictures of them.
