Coronal Mass Ejection Reaches Earth On Sunday Night (spaceweatherlive.com) 32

"A long duration C2 solar flare launched an asymmetrical full halo coronal mass ejection into space," tweeted the nonprofit science site SpaceWeatherLive (sharing a black-and-white video). "The solar plasma cloud is likely to arrive at Earth late on Sunday, 13 March. Minor G1 geomagnetic storm conditions are likely with a chance of moderate G2 conditions."

Long-time Slashdot reader PuddleBoy shared this additional report from their web site: The solar flare lasted for hours and launched an asymmetrical full halo coronal mass ejection into space. Most of the ejecta is heading north-west but a significant part of the plasma cloud is expected to arrive at our planet. The coronal mass ejection was launched at a speed of about 600km/s which is a fairly average speed. This puts the likely arrival time at Earth late on Sunday, 13 March.

Minor G1 geomagnetic storm conditions (Kp5) are likely with a chance of moderate G2 conditions which equals a Kp-value of 6. Middle latitude locations might catch a glimpse of the aurora near the northern (or southern) horizon under optimal conditions.

So it's a nocturnal mass ejection...

... in what time zone? North America / Pacific? Central European Standard Time?

Whoever wrote this summary knows that the Earth rotates, right?

    • Dunno, maybe its a reference to Cubic Time: https://timecube.2enp.com/ [2enp.com]

Just as much that they know there's a link you can click to get the details.
Details that aren't summarized... in the summary... because they are details.

      • Those details don't say much more than the summary. The actual detail anyone would be interested in is a link to a picture on TWITTER showing where the ejection will hit. I have that website is adblocked, it is a shame they didn't link to a more reliable source (than twitter).

Ditto (in my case, script blocking via noscript, under a default policy of blocking sites unless {permanently or momentarily} whitelisted).

There's no mention to the timezone. I mean, times without timezones need context to be useful.
      • Clearly you didn't even click the link you're telling people to click, because that detail isn't present.

Have any more useless advice to dispense?

    • Most of the ejecta is heading north-west

I am also curious how a space compass works.

No, the sun cycles around Earth's disk. Common Core Science is bogus and rigged.

  • They let Don back on Twitter?

  • Even funnier are the news stories saying it will arrive late Sunday / early Monday. Time zones have they not, said Yoda. The CME arrived March 13th at approximately 11:00 UT.

    You're welcome.

Damn, did I sleep through the end of the world, or is this some kind of Triffid [wikipedia.org] situation and I should stay inside until my food runs out?

      • Good news everyone, end of world is not this week and not by CME. Instead it's likely Putin will bomb weapon supply line from NATO ally Poland to Ukraine within two weeks and that lights up the party.

        • by bjwest ( 14070 )
I highly doubt Putin will bomb the supply lines inside a NATO country, but once they're inside Ukraine, they're fair targets. Of course, if those supply lines are equipped with surface-to-air missiles, he may lose a few more planes in the process...
          • but that's just what they threatened (from CNBC, March 11 7:08am EST)

Speaking to Russiaâ(TM)s Channel One broadcaster on Saturday, Russiaâ(TM)s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov issued a warning to the West that could lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

âoeWe warned the United States that pumping Ukraine with weapons from a number of countries orchestrated by them is not just a dangerous move, but an action that turns the corresponding convoys into legitimate targets,

            • by bjwest ( 14070 )

No, it's not what they threatened. The actual statement:

We warned the United States that pumping Ukraine with weapons from a number of countries orchestrated by them is not just a dangerous move, but an action that turns the corresponding convoys into legitimate targets.

This says nothing about striking inside of a NATO country, only that doing so "turns the corresponding convoys into legitimate targets." The part that says "Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov issued a warning to the West that could lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO" portion is assumption on Channel One's part, and I highly doubt any NATO country will move into Ukraine to strike Russia if the convoys are attacked i

Sure there is: Relative to any spinning astronomical body. Right-hand rule: Fingers pointing the direction of spin, thumb points north, i.e. looking down from the sky at the north pole along the spin axis you see the object spin counter-clockwise (by definition).

Of course though the Sun's and the Earth's Norths are in the same general direction, they differ by quite a bit - by over 26 degrees. The Earth's pole direction (
