Einstein Foundation To Present the Inaugural Award for Promoting Quality in Research (idw-online.de) 11

The Einstein Foundation Berlin is honoring the American physicist Paul Ginsparg and the Center for Open Science with the inaugural Einstein Foundation Award for Promoting Quality in Research. Paul Ginsparg is the founder of the preprint server arXiv.org, the first platform to exchange scientific discoveries among scientists immediately, openly and globally without review- and paywall restrictions.

Progress often happens from that someone who decided to not approach a problem with the old way of thinking about a problem. Many of the wolds great inventions and ideas happened to people who didn't work/study in that field, and just took a different approach to a problem to solve it in a new way. So for progress we need to make sure such barriers to sharing science and ideas should be open and not locked behind a Academic Scientist Class wall, because that will just block out a lot of people who don't think the same way about a problem.

However, there are a lot more people who think they are out of the box thinkers, while they are just creating dribbled nonsense. With a lot of people trying to use siphons, weights, endless amount of polishing to create a perpetual motion and create free unlimited energy. Or make a FTL engine, Anti-Gravity devices, Ways of detecting ghosts and spirits... There is a lot of things people are trying to prove but do not have the Scientific training to actually try to make it possible. But their ego's just got in the way, and figured their intuition was enough to solve the problem that has been deemed impossible.

Quality in scientific research should be a given, not something that needs to ne "promoted."

Sadly, in the real world where it is NOT a given, promoting quality in scientific research is necessary.

Sadly, in the real world where it is NOT a given, promoting quality in scientific research is necessary.

It is about as close to a given as humans are capable of doing.

Scientists are humans just like other people. And it's a little odd, there are people out there who want to discredit all science based on a few examples. And there are people who believe in bigfoot and crystal harmonies. Sad to say the bigfoot and crystal people predominate, I fear.

An award based on merit alone? How unusual.
  • I'm a big fan of ArXiv.org. I believe they deserve awards in various fields - most notably, accessibility. Surely, ArXiv et al are important for equality, for the empowerment of the poor who can afford to pay for neither access nor publication... A fantastic initiative, hats off!
However, purely from the perspective of promoting QUALITY in research, I don't see any reason for awarding them, sorry.
Basically, ArXiv skips the peer review step in the publication process, that's their key differentiator.
    I'm fine

  • This foundation has NOTHING to do with Einstein, other than stealing the name. Founded in 2009 by Berlin govt, part of the same outfit that Einstein fled. Quite ironic.

  • I think it's good motivation, why not. I myself would be happy to be given such a reward. The only place where I earn as a science writer is on this site https://edusson.com/write-my-l... [edusson.com] where I help to write my lab report. Those who can't make it or don't have time to write on their own. All in time with deadlines and get a good paycheck. The site is really good and we perform our tasks well. But I would like to devote myself entirely to science.
