Nanoparticle Exposure Could Disrupt Immune Cell Function 31
MTorrice writes "A new study suggests there's more to nanoparticle toxicology than cell life and death. Although immune cells treated with iron oxide particles appeared healthy in standard toxicology tests, they struggled to perform one of their key jobs: engulfing pathogenic bacteria. The researchers wonder if exposure to significant levels of the nanoparticles could lead to dysfunction in people's immune systems."

Seriously, if it were nano particles it wouldn't explain why:
- it's a sexually transmitted disease (through exposure to blood)
- it has a variable dormancy period
- why it gets more serious with time passing (nanoparticles would, just like heavy metals, eventually leave the body)
- why it's treatable with antiviral medicine.

It is great that we are learning this stuff. However nanoparticles are not in general good or bad, they are an entire class of molecules that are on the scale of a nanometer. There are some we have found that tend to concentrate in certain cell types and may help or harm the cell depending on what they are.
