Solar Flare vs. Plasmasphere 7

The appropriately-named Nova Express informs us, "According to the Space Weather Page, 'A powerful X-class solar flare erupted...today at 1530 UT. The flare could trigger radio blackouts and high radiation levels in low-earth orbit...the leading edge of the disturbance will trigger geomagnetic storms when it passes by Earth in 30 - 45 hours.'" Coincidentally, Tei'ehm Teuw passed along this article showing what it'll collide with when it gets here: our plasmasphere, the shell of ions and electrons lying at the top of our atmosphere and extending far out into space. This press release has some amazing photos and movies taken by an equally amazing satellite.

  • Are you browsing through comments.pl? I do, and I see lots of dissaperaing posts. Sometimes they get marked with "don't post" before they get removed. And I've been getting "Invalid Form Key" errors on one of my accounts as well. Also note articles in comments.pl that are forward-posted in time

As you've probably already guessed, these are bugs in the code. You shouldn't be seeing some of what you are, and you shouldn't be getting the "invalid form key" errors. Fixes have been written and are being tested for both these problems.

If you can make a bug reproducible, please feel free to submit a detailed report to SourceForge [sourceforge.net]. This helps us a lot. Thanks.

  • What's up with the disappearing article--Like the Stephenson one. And articles just sitting there but not showing up on the page. I could've been first thru tenth post as long as this one's been sitting here.

I'm also getting other wierd errors like "Connection reset by peer" and "invalid formkey". Odd.

  • This is really wierd--notice the amount of time between first post and second post. BTW, here's a link to the Neal Stephenson article that disappeared:

  • I wonder how these EM fields influence newer "Fly-by-Wire" aircraft.

  • Yup, 'round about now, Sola, APC and all the others must be having a massive run on Nasdaq.

Better make sure the the batteries in your own UPSes are good...

Well, if you're not an astrophotographer, at least go outside around local midnight the night of June 8 (tomorrow). Last time we had a CME this big, the auroras were visible as far south as the Carolinas. So much of the nation should be in for a show. I know I'll be outside.

After a number of decimal places, nobody gives a damn.
