We are interested in moving our public workstations from Win 2000 to Linux. grex writes "The FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) study from the University of Maastricht has published its final report. One of its five parts is the developer survey based basically on developers from the European Union. Results show that Debian is the preferred distribution, GNOME the desktop the majority choose and vi more popular than Emacs. But this survey also handles economic, law-related and motivation aspects among developers that make it very interesting to read."

While the C# compiler, itself written in C#, has been able to compile itself since March, Mono can now compile its own complete set of class libraries too. This announcement closely follows the release of the Phonic media player, the first .NET application for the GNOME desktop."

With the release of Gnome 2.0, many users have looked into upgrading Ximian to Gnome 2.0, but there are different approaches to this. One, the 2.0 Developement Snapshot available in RedCarpet. Another, the Ximian RPM's that are available via the Gnome.org web pages. Has anyone used either approach? Which is the most stable? Which will allow RedCarpet to upgrade to Ximian's Gnome 2.0, when it becomes available?"

Dave Hansen, the IBM programmer who organized this interview (questions were posted on May 28), says, "Perhaps I didn't make this clear enough during the call for questions, but myself and my group are kernel programmers. But, we were able to dredge up some responses for answers that we couldn't do ourselves. We haven't been able to get an answer to the ViaVoice question yet, but if there is real interest, I'll make sure that we do get some kind of answer back to Slashdot.
