Apple Denies Opensourcing Quicktime/Changes APSL 52

webslacker writes "According to Macintouch, several Apple sources are denying that Quicktime will actually be opensourced. It could just end up being a simple confusion of Quicktime viewers and Quicktime server, seeing as how news.com made it sound as if all of Quicktime is going to be opensource. " Here is Yesterday's Story on the subject. Update: 04/19 06:17 by H :Apple has said, however, that the newly unveiled QuickTime Streaming Server will be included under the Apple Public Source License.

Apple Opening QuickTime Code 192

Wonko42 writes "Apple has apparently decided to make QuickTime open-source in order to beat the competition. The article is on News.com. " I sure hope so. Of course, the article leaves several questions unanswered: what kind of license? APSL? What about codecs? Since it's only the server, I assume nothing will happen in regards to opening codecs. I hope I'm wrong, but fear I'm not. Thoughts?

EvangeList closes down 119

Otter writes " The EvangeList mailing list, the rallying point of the MacOS community during Apple's darkest years, has come to an end. Guy Kawasaki writes, "In the past two years Apple has experienced a stunning turnaround. This is due to many things including the steadfast loyalty of Apple's customers--and EvangeListas are the most steadfast of the steadfast. The original purpose of EvangeList was to counteract the negative news about Apple and Macintosh, and I believe that EvangeList has served its purpose--fantastically, as a matter of fact. So after discussing what we should do with EvangeList with the folks at Apple, we've decided to retire the list." As Apple has come off the critical list, EvangeList has pretty much petered out. Looks like Team Slashdot will be moving up in the distributed.net rankings. " Man, what's a guy to do? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

APSL Violating the OSD (Round 9) 157

nickm writes "Seth David Schoen of CalLUG fame has written an essay entitled The APSL and Export Controls. This goes beyond patent craziness and nit-picking about legal details but rather shows a direct violation of the OSD in that the APSL adds a bit of US law to the license (adding additional burdens for those outside the US). Apple and Palm Computing: Take 2? 101

" At the shareholders meeting, Jobs has left open the possibilty of Apple relaunching a handhold, and confirmed that they have talked to 3Com about the Palm division. ApplePilot anyone?
