iMac II to have LCD/Firewire/DVD/AirPort/new color 273

Cheeseman writes "The usually very reliable Japan Apple Watch quotes South Korean sources saying that the iMac II will be launched at the Paris Apple Expo in a couple of weeks. What's interesting about this is that one of the new colors will be the 'graphite and white' as seen on the G4. I suspect that this means that Apple will use the iMac II to get apple back into the business market and sell one G4 together with 10-30 iMacs IIs for about 10 to 25 grand. With AirPort this means that you've got an instant LAN that works out of the box with no cabling. " And the rumours are that the new machine will be less then 1000$US-though I would suspect that's a stripped down machine.

The G4 and Apple's Second Coming 432

Apple's G4, launched in a blizzard of savvy hype, heralds the second Age of Apple. Although this one is very different from the first (for one thing, Apple is a lot greedier), Apple's string of successes says a lot about the fact that individual creativity will beat out corporate marketers every single time.

Apple Prevents G3 Owners From Upgrading to G4 395

sammy baby writes "Wired News is reporting that Apple deliberately wrote the firmware in the Apple G3 computers to prevent owners from upgrading them using the G4 CPU. Damn shame - I would have considered buying a G4, but I don't want to give my money to a company that resorts to tactics like this."

Mac and Linux Sharing Serial Ports? 7

c-tron asks: "I would like to share several serial ports from a ISDN board in a Linux server to some MacOS clients, because I want to share a pool of modems/ISDN cards to an Apple network. The service should be transparent to the user. Are there any solutions (even commercial)? The Linux side is not the problem (I could do that on my own). The problem is the MacOS client. "

Cringley: Apple using Open Source to get Microsoft 153

alfredo writes " In the latest I Cringley, Robert Cringley demonstrates how Apple is using open source to undermine Microsoft. " Cringley, as always, makes an interested and impassioned argument, essentially arguing that Apple is doing the politically correct thing of Open Source-ing portions of their code, but doing it to become de facto standards (a la Quicktime), or else to push Microsoft down. Worth a read.

Streaming Server for Linux 97

Apple has released the source to their Open Source Streaming Server. It now supports Linux in addition to MacOS X, which can only help Linux in the server market. The software has been released under the APSL, and can support 2000 connections on a(n admittedly loaded) G3. Does anyone know if Apple is working on modifying the APSL to meet the concerns about the revocation clause expressed by many people in the free software community?
