Apple released OS Tuner 1.0 which when applied causes connectivity problems. An Apple spokesman said that the patch was only intended for people in a specific situation. The spokesman also said that the bug patch and the need to restart their machines after changing TCP/IP settings only applies to those with high-speed Internet connects. OT Tuner 1.0 switches off an option in Open Transport that would cause a Macintosh to respond to certain small network packets with a large Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet. This update prevents Macintosh computers from being the cause of certain types of Denial of Service (DOS) issues. Basically, by sending a Mac running OS 9 a custom UDP packet, you can get it to reply with a 1500 byte ICMP packet(these packets are normally sent as part of MTU discovery). Send these UDP packets to a bunch of Macs, spoof the source addresses....voila, instant DOS. Apparently this is "in the wild"; he reports several scans designed to elicit these packets. "

Bobbi Style wrote to us with the word from insidemacgames that the Macinoth version of Half-Life has been cancelled. Valve Software sent out a letter explaining that they had found that the version of Half-Life that would be released for the Macintosh was not up to what they wanted the game to be. Rather then treat Mac users as 2nd class citizens, they have decided to simply not release it at all. Disappointing news, however, which also casts doubts on the viability of projects like Tribes 2 for the Mac.

ferret wrote to us with the final word from high at Apple about what's up with the G4 Orders. No, they are not cancelled. Yes, there's been a confusion. 400 and 450 Mhz machines will ship as originally promised, but the 500 Mhz machine will not ship until next year. This means that customer who ordered a 500 Mhz will be offered a 450 Mhz machine for now.
