Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.1.4 59

terbor writes "Networking, security, and authoring support seem to be the biggest improvements found in this update released this afternoon. Not available for download yet, but it can be found in your Software Update panel." I would have posted this sooner, but I had to download it first. :-)

MS Office and IE Exploits 31

buzban writes "Microsoft has issued this security bulletin regarding potential buffer/code exploits. It seems to have a potential effect on a lot of things, including Office v.X, Office:2001, IE for Mac OS and for Mac OS X, AppleScript, et al... I couldn't get the update from Apple just yet, but that might be my own screwup. ;)" Only the patch for MSIE on Mac OS X is in Software Update through Apple. All others must be downloaded from Microsoft. Update: 04/17 21:02 GMT by P : pumpkinhead writes in that ZDNet has a story with more details.

Apple Acquires Zayante 26

pinqkandi writes "Apple purchased Zayante, a big name in the FireWire/i.Link/IEEE 1394 community. Apple hopes to increase its FireWire presence with this purchase, or, in their own words, 'By acquiring Zayante, Apple is extending its commitment to FireWire as the premiere, high-speed digital interface solution.' Interestingly enough, Zayante works a great deal with Windows FireWire integration ... Windows-compatible iPod anyone?"

The NeXT Information Archive 23

z80 writes "I've started to scan all the NeXT-related material I can get my hands on and put it online. Others are more than welcome to participate to gather more information, articles about and other printed stuff about NeXT Inc., NeXTSTEP and Openstep, as well as other related products from NeXT. This great OS is the foundation on which Apple and the Mac will be built on for years to come and it would be fun if more Mac users would learn about where it comes from."

BFS Creator Giampaolo Joins Apple 35

zephc writes "According to The Register, Dominic Giampaolo, creator of BFS, Be's journaling file system, has 'joined Apple as a file system engineer. He started last week.' As a Mac user and former BeOS user, I am delighted to hear this, as it has great implications for the future of filesystems on the Mac. The article is a great transcript with Dominic and another BeOS great, Benoit Schillings." Another user adds, "Interesting for a man who once said that Apple was the epitome of everything Be was not."

Apple's Response to Microsoft: Unix Ads? 729

flaneur writes "In light of Microsoft's recent anti-Unix ads and the end of the 5-year contract between Apple, it's pretty interesting that Apple is suddenly running print ads emphasizing the Unix core of Mac OS X. Under the headline 'Sends other UNIX boxes to /dev/null', the ads contain quotes from various journalists praising the OS. But the most interesting thing? There's no IE in the dock -- Netscape is shown instead! Hmmm..."

Photoshop Graces Mac OS X 62

cpk0 writes "Well, we finally have Photoshop on Mac OS X. Now that must have been one heck of a year over at Adobe, cause this piece of software is pretty elegent. Even on my iMac 600 it's pretty swift and smooth. There's no official Adobe press release yet, but there's a VersionTracker page for it, and that makes it official enough for me."

CaptyTV for Mac 26

rograndom writes "There's something very interesting on Apple's Japanese site. CaptyTV is part of Apple's 'Digital Hub', and it's a USB analog-to-digital video converter. A rough translatation from the site says talks about TiVo-like functionality, looking up program listings on the internet and recording at a certain time. It also talks about dumping your archived videos to DVD with the iMac's & PowerMac's SuperDrive. Sounds very cool, I hope it makes it over to this side of the world." And is that an external SuperDrive there on the sidebar?

Microsoft to Continue Mac Support 275

rakeswell writes "Though Microsoft's five-year agreement to support some Microsoft applications on the Mac has come to a close, Microsoft announces that it will continue its support of the platform. This means that new versions of Office, IE, ODBC, and Palm synchronization will be made available for Mac OS X. Also, they intend to build in .NET support for the Mac, though Microsoft says that they do not intend to push .NET for Mac developers."

Display News Headlines on iPod 23

1Eye writes "Wired is running this article on the iPod, about a hack to display XML news headlines." That's pretty nifty. I wrote a 40-line Perl script to download arbitrary RSS feeds and create MP3s with the headline as the title and the site name as the artist, but it doesn't do long titles (limited to 30 chars by ID3v1, D'oh!) and doesn't manage the MP3s with the iPod.

Aqua OS X writes "Chimera, the new Gecko-based Cocoa Mac OS X browser, has just reached version 0.2. It is available for download and it includes native Quartz rendering, new icons, expanded menus, and a spiffy new fading splash screen. Unfortunately, plugin support did not make the cut like it was supposed to. Check it out, this browser should be awesome once it is done."

Steinberg Cubase SX Release for Mac OS X 23

RemiT writes "Steinberg plans to release a Mac OS X version of Cubase SX, their next generation of professional digital music production software. Indicated release date is after the end of Q2 2002, finally making good on Steinberg's commitment to support Mac OS X. (I wonder how long it will be before Mac stalwarts like Moby are using Mac OS X in concert...)"

DarkClown writes "Just noticed the ISO for Yellow Dog Linux 2.2 went up for download on their main server; you may want to wait for it to hit a mirror, though." It was available for purchase a few weeks ago, and now you can download it for free, you moochers. You might also want to check out the installation guides, including an instructional video via Real Media.
