MaxVlast writes in that the The 1394 Trade Association has adopted the FireWire trademark, logo and symbol as a brand identity for the IEEE 1394 connection standard in a "no-fee license agreement" between 1394ta and Apple. Apple has also granted 1394ta the right to sub-license the FireWire Trademark for use on products, packaging and promotion of the standard.

MoneyT writes "As reported at vnunet, experts are claiming that Macs are no safer than PCs in terms of protection from a virus. Seems more to me like they're just saying that we Mac users aren't invulnerable, but until I see things like nimda taking out my Mac, I'll stick with the iBook." The article doesn't mention that the "7,000 macro viruses" attack Microsoft products (leaving uses of a Mac only as a web server completely protected from them), nor does it quote any statistics about how many Mac vs. Windows viruses exist, and it doesn't address the real- world fact that Macs are hit with viruses far less often than Windows machines.

Apparently I'm Speaking at MacHack somewhere during the show- June 20-22. No clue what I'm speaking about yet. Never even been invited to speak at an Apple focused show, so it's certain to be interesting. It's in Dearborn, MI (near Detroit) if you feel the need to show up and flame me in person. The Mozilla-based Chimera browser was featured by many speakers during this month's WWDC, which may constitute a backhand endorsement, and could be used as a weapon in the 'negotiations' with Bill Gates and Co. over IE ..." Chimera is beginning to turn into a usable browser, favored by many Mac OS X users. Who knows? Update: 05/28 15:33 GMT by P : Chimera 0.2.8 was released today.

Apple is accepting any Power Mac (from the 6100s on up) for a credit towards the purchse of a new G4 tower. Seems like they're a) pushing for more people to upgrade to Mac OS X, and b) pushing to clear out their G4 inventory before MacWorld New York." It looks like it is not any Power Mac, but old ones (I don't see iMacs listed). Still, I wish they would do the program in the US.

hysterion writes "Just came across the nice Unix Porting Guide (pdf) posted by Apple earlier this month. Topics include NetInfo, using Project Builder with gnumake, autoconf, XFree86, Tcl/Tk, Qt ... it is a bit short on scripting languages, and they speak as if KDE were already ported, but other than that I found it an informative read." They also didn't mention fink, and they put "Unix" in all caps. However, they were honest about the shell scripting limitations of AppleScript, although they didn't mention that AppleScript -- especially via osascript -- is pretty buggy in Mac OS X right now (this is my annoyance of the week, so allow me to indulge myself).

mpf writes "This is a simple procedure to allow you to be prompted at login for your SSH passphrase and have it optionally stored in your Mac OS X Keychain, so you'll never have to enter your passphrase again! It allows you to use ssh from AppleScripts and other non-interactive applications without entering your passphase." Nice idea. It combines two pieces of software, one that starts ssh-agent on login, and one that gets called to provide your ssh passphrase when needed (which can store/retrieve it in the Keychain). There's a small AppleScript to call ssh-add on login, to tie it all together.

Apple announced today that the popular iBook line has been updated, upping it to a 700MHz G3. It's good to see they're still keeping the 12.1" models, which are of the few remaining small screen, ultra-portables..." They've also improved the video card to an ATI Mobility Radeon. Prices range from $1500 to $1800 for the 700MHz model (12" and 14"), and there's a 12"/600MHz model for $1200.

babbage writes "There has been some talk recently on various mailing lists about getting a Mac OS X version of Ximian Connector extension to Evolution, which allows Evolution to interact with Microsoft Exchange 2000 servers much as Microsoft Outlook can. It is already possible to build and run Gnome and Evolution on Mac OS X, thanks largely to projects such as Fink. Ximian is aware of this interest, and has indicated that if enough users expressed a serious interest in buying the product -- the target number was 500 paying users -- they would be willing to produce a Mac OS X port of Connector. To that end, I've set up an petition to help gauge user interest."

bats asks: "In my computer room at home, I have several machines -- and a fluorescent desk lamp. Among my various boxen is an iMac DV (slot loading) circa 1999. Its configured to go into power saving mode, but respond to wake-on-lan packets. The weird thing is this: If I flip on the fluorescent desk lamp, the sleeping iMac will suddenly wake up! This happens with 100% consistency. The desk lamp is plugged into a power strip and into the wall. The iMac is plugged into a UPS and then into the wall. The network switch for the room is near the desk lamp (1-2 feet) but the iMac is some distance away (8-10 feet). My question is: WTF?! How the heck does the iMac know when the light comes on? It seems like it must be some power spike in the AC or noise on the network interface. However, the power strip and the UPS should block an AC spike and the chance of electrical noise in the cat-5 looking like a wake-on-lan packet seem more than miniscule. So again I ask you, dear AskSlashdot reader, WTF?! I await conspiracy theories, pseudo-science, wild rantings, and hopefully, the right answer."

SDRAM, 4 ATA drive bays (up to 480GB), 2 Gb Ethernet ports, 2 64/66 PCI slots (one of which may be taken up by one Gb Ethernet card), and, of course, FireWire.
