Hydra: Rendezvous-Enabled Text Editing 392

Tokerat writes "It's incredible what some people dream up. A recent post on MacSlash brought this little gem to my attention, and I have a feeling some of you fellow /.ers will be screaming to get your hands on this: Hydra is a Rendezvous-enabled text editor, which allows several people to edit a text document at the same time. Imagine doing some extreme programming with this, with one person writing code and another following the first and correcting their mistakes & making optimizations simultaneously? It already works with Apple's Project Builder, supports syntax coloring, and the ability to manage access on a per-document basis. Future improvements will include support for RTF and much tighter integration with Project Builder. It looks to me like these guys are really on to something here."

Apple Remote Desktop 1.2 Released 38

sirisaac82 writes "Apple released version 1.2 of its Remote Desktop software. According to the website, new features include Remote Software Installation and Remote Network Startup Disk. Too bad it wasn't released yesterday, or you could have had a few more pranks to pull on those annoying co-workers."

Apple SuperDrive Gets Faster....For Free 58

garaxiel writes "Just made a punch over to apple's website to notice a link detailing an update to all SuperDrives (or most; they provide a way to check if you're up to date) so that the superdrive can use the newer, faster media. Heck, if this is all I had to do to get a faster burner back in the day, I would have gladly switched to Apple!"

Beige Box Apple Clone? 533

steve.m writes "Finally it looks like I'll be able to get a cheap box to run MacOSX on, but not from Apple! John Fraser is (sort of) getting into the clone business 5 years after Apple shut down their 3 year long 'experiment' in licensing the hardware. Based on off the shelf apple components in a custom pizza box style case with no bolted on display, a barebones 'iBox' will be around 300 USD and require a processor, disk and memory (and the OS). Complete systems (again, without the OS) should start at around 650 USD."
It's funny. Laugh.

BBEdit's Most Expensive Upgrade 19

BBEdit users with a lot of money and fast reflexes can order something not available from most software companies: yroJJory writes "For the duration of the day, Bare Bones Software is offering BBEdit 7 for $250,000. The new pricing option includes: hand delivery of the product by a Bare Bones employee in a gorilla suit; a breaking-of-the-seal ceremony; Interpretive reading of the manual; and one year of feature request implementation service. And to think...I just paid for my license last week. Shucks."

USB Floppy Disk Drive RAID Array Under OS X 53

ohlssonvox writes "I believe this is the first USB Floppy Disk Drive RAID; I have never heard of any others. It was done using OS X. I would like to share this with the world. The world must know the power of USB FDD RAID!!! This is NOT an April fools joke, I just happen to be fool enough to make this on April fools."

Apple 12-inch PowerBook G4 Review 55

Dave_B writes "Tony Smith of El Reg gives his verdict after a month with Apple's 12-inch Powerbook." His overall impression was good, but there are some words of caution in here regarding battery life and heat, so read before buying one ;)

Security Hole in Windows' QuickTime Player 23

Susan Kare: Mother of Icons You Love (or Hate) 389

bughunter writes "One of today's Yahoo Daily Picks is the personal exhibit of Susan Kare: the mimimalist creator of most of the original Macintosh icons then, later, the iconic elements for Windows 3.0, and she didn't stop there. More than just icons, her GUI elements have become part of the modern collective subconscious - trashcans, bombs, and Happy Macs are universally recognized by computer literate persons the world over. (I can personally attest that the Mac System 6 beachball is burned into my soul...) She deserves some recognition of her own."

Apple Responds to Adobe 148

Thargok333 writes "Apple calls out Adobe on the 'PC is Faster' article linked from the Adobe website. They state that it is an After Effects bug, which they are working close to Adobe to fix. With Adobe's idea of G4 optimization, I am not impressed that a 'single 1.25 GHz G3' gets beat by a P4 3 GHz."

MacHack On, Despite WWDC Rescheduling 16

ddtstudio writes "Apple moved its Worldwide Developers Conference -- a Mecca for Mac programmers -- a few months to make a new OS preview available, which caused enough consternation as developers had to change air tickets and hotel reservations. But now WWDC is only a few days before MacHack, a long-standing, more 'underground' get-together in Michigan. What to do? Apparently MacHack will go on, says, eWeek's Matthew Rothenberg."

Mac OS X: The Missing Manual (Second Edition) 164

emmastory writes "I finally (finally) picked up Mac OS X: The Missing Manual. I've been meaning to grab it since I first heard that David Pogue wrote a book on OS X; I've been a fan of his for a while. I remember reading his stuff in Macworld -- on System 7, even -- when someone gave me a subscription (many) years ago, and his New York Times columns have generally been pretty good as well." Update: 03/25 16:43 GMT by T : Ha! The original headline was missing OS X's "X" -- now in place. Read on ...

Adobe Says PCs Are Preferred 853

Father Of Free Choice writes "Abobe has picked Windows as the preferred platform for running Photoshop, After Effects, and Illustrator. I don't know how many Mac people this will upset, but given the large hold Apple has on design pros and film, this seems like a bad move on Adobe's part."

Dvorak Thinks Apple Will Switch to Intel 440

SeanTobin was among several users who noted that Dvorak's latest column discusses the possibility of Apple going to Intel for future macs. Yeah, this rumor pops up pretty often, but I wonder how long before we'd get binary compatibility between other x86 unix OSs.

FFTs Using AltiVec on Linux and Mac OS X 33

GregAllen writes "After searching for a good open-source AltiVec implementation of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), I have put together the AltiVec FFT page. It has all of the source, some benchmarks, and runs on Mac OS X or LinuxPPC. I even compared it to the venerable (but scalar) FFTW."
