Russia Orders National Mask Mandate As COVID-19 Cases Spike (cbsnews.com) 59

In an effort to curb the second wave of COVID-19, the Russian government on Tuesday implemented a nationwide mask mandate, as coronavirus cases spike worldwide. CBS News reports: Under the new mandate, effective Wednesday, masks will be mandatory in crowded public spaces, such as public transportation, parking lots and elevators, according to the order published on the website for the federal health watchdog agency Rospotrebnadzor, also known as the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing. The department has also advised local authorities to ban all entertainment activities, including bars and restaurants, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. It recommended strengthening safety protocols on public transport, taxis, shops, restaurants and theaters. People not wearing masks will be refused service in these establishments. However, Moscow authorities said that they are not planning to close nightclubs and bars overnight.

Russia has had over 1,520,000 cases of COVID-19 and over 26,000 deaths since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University. It recorded a record-high number of new cases on Monday, with 17,148, and October has seen more confirmed cases in the country overall than any other month. [...] The country has the fourth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, behind the United States, India and Brazil.

I thought the russians developed a vaccine? Why aren't they distributing it to their population? Or does it not work?

The "vaccine" is incorporated into the masks.

[ And now that Putin has mandated this, Trump can start wearing one ... a very strong and power, beautiful, mask. :-) ]

They are not glossing over anything, The Russian Vaccine like all the others is still in medical trials. The Russian one is midway through a 40,000 person trial, which if the articles this week are correct, they are thus far successful. The general release is not due till start of 2021 still.

Successful based on what exactly? Even here in the US where we have effectively done jack all to curb the spread of it, the survival rate for this "virus" is well north of 90% without any interdiction the vast majority of the people infected never require ANY medical assistance much less hospitalization. So what exactly are the metrics of success regarding mass hysteria?

It hasn't really been tested enough to know if it works or not yet.

Even if it does work. They just can't make enough of it anyway. [cnn.com]

Russia's own estimates of their capability to mass-produce the vaccine vary greatly depending on whom you ask.

In July, the head of Russia Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev said the sovereign wealth fund plans to produce more than 30 million doses by end of 2020. But Russia's trade and industry minister Denis Manturov said earlier this month these numbers are "impossible."

They have and have selectively released it to some of their military until trials are complete. Currently in a 40,000 person trial. So for all the rhetoric of them not doing the trials they really still are doing the clinical trials.
      • Still in trials and a long way from finishing them. [cnn.com]

Alexander Gintsburg, head of the Gamaleya Institute which developed the vaccine, told CNN in an exclusive interview last week at Valdai Discussion Club, a Moscow-based think tank where Putin often makes an appearance, that 17,000 people took part in the Phase 3 trials but acknowledged that only 6,000 so far have received both doses necessary to complete the vaccination.

The Russian vaccine "is probably two to three months behind," Chumakov said.

  • If in any way your job can be done remotely, do it. This will really help bring the potential down. I am ready to WFH through the winter if needed and will only be happy if given the opportunity. I have no idea why anyone would want me in an office, but for some reason I am in high demand to decorate a nearly empty room with my flesh.

    • I'm guessing that's it's a handsome piece of flesh. Maybe there are hidden cameras and you're on a live stream.

    • Is this some sly way of advertising your onlyfans?

    • If you're a nurse and you live above the 3rd floor, be sure to keep a parachute at hand.

    • What the hell is WFH?
      Windows for Hell?
      Short for WaiFuH?
      Wanking Frozen Hitler?

      • Are you saying you've lived through 2020 without picking up on the common abbreviation for Work From Home and recognising it in context in a short post that talks about doing your job remotely? I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing but I suspect it's unusual.

        • Yes, I am actually not Murican, nor is my job physically possible from home, as is the case for anyonewhere I work.
Somebody not living on little planet Murica... untinkable, right?

Also, Wanking Frozen Hitler waa prett funny, admit it!

  • More fodder for the anti-mask, anti-science Trumpers... We ain't wearin' no mask like them Russians do. Murica!
    • Doesn't Fox news like Putin for his strength(https://www.politicususa.com/2014/07/22/fox-news-contributor-obamas-frightened-praises-putin-real-leader.html)? Don't they also say masks make you weak? I wonder how they'll reconcile those two ideas. Not sarcasm or rhetorical. I genuinely wonder.
    • I figured it'll be the opposite, Trump will now start touting masks and enacting mask-wearing requirements..

      • Russians are wearing masks?
We can't allow a mask gap. Wear your mask now!
But sir, China have been wearing masks for months...head asplodes...
    • Russia is waaaay more anti-mask than anyone in the US. I have never had some random stranger come up to me and berate me for wearing a mask. I have seen people complain about wearing one. I have seen people insist they dont work. I have seen about 1/3rd of mask wearers purposely leave their nose uncovered turning it into a mouth guard. But never have I had a series of people berate me because I choose to wear a mask.

I have a friend who immigrated from the USSR back in the 80s. He remarried about 8 years ago

  • I wonder if there'll be disinformation spread over there too warning about conspiracies

    • Folks who publically complain TOO loudly about official narratives in russia have a bad habit of ending up getting poked by strange men with unreasonably pointy umbrellas.

Only if they're popular. Russia is smart enough to let regular people vent, as long as it doesn't get popular.

      • Yeah, how primitive!
In America, we got proper gula... err, I mean black sites, like Guantanamo! And the USA
A PATRIOT Act (It's really called that!)! We can disappear anyone without trial or ability to call his family! Even though Obama said he would end it, lol. And best of all: We can actually make the livesto..err...population want what we tell them to want! Our partisan breeding mass psychology schemes are second to none! They will blame the victims!

        We are /so/ much better!

Russia announced a vaccine a bit ago now. What a surprise, rushing out a vaccine that isn't sufficiently tested would prove to be a bad idea.

In Soviet Russia, mask wears you?

    • You do realize that production is still a thing right? It takes two doses to make someone immune. There are 147 million people in russia. Thats 300 million doses. Their health ministers are saying even 30 million my end of the year is an unrealistic goal. But lets say that for arguments sake its not. Lets say they can pull that rabbit out of their hat. 30million doses in 3 months. Thats 10 million doses a month. How many months will it take to vaccinate all 147 million people with a 2 dose requirement? 30

Fortunately they didn't rush out the vaccine. They said they they have one. They didn't say they are giving it to the general public. The vaccine is currently undergoing clinical testing.

I wonder if the memo will make it down to Putin's direct reports?

  • But Russia has a vaccine, they said so! Just in time to save Trump's pustulant election ass!

  • Someone had better duct tape Trump's head before it explodes! I will admit I am curious to see how fast Trump can try and walk back his roughly 300M tweets calling masks useless.
