But I think CRISPR is currently the cheapest and easiest path to an extinction-level event and the most plausible resolution of the Fermi Paradox. The paradox has only loomed larger since we've discovered how frequent planets are. I don't think they had confirmed the existence of a single extrasolar planet until long after Fermi had passed away. In those days that parameter was just a wild guestimate, though I can't find the value he used for it. (But I admit that I didn't search that hard.
