KentuckyFC writes "The world of cosmology is abuzz with rumours that an orbiting observatory called PAMELA has discovered dark matter e. Here's the deal. The PAMELA people say their experiment has seen more positrons than can be explained by known physics and that this excess exactly matches what dark matter particles would produce if they were annihilating each other at the center of the galaxy, as many cosmologists expect. The team presented its preliminary results at a conference last month but, with the prospect of a major discovery on its hands, has gone to ground while re-analyzing the data and preparing it for publication. The team is understandably tight-lipped while all this is going on. But today, a couple of cosmologists publish their analysis of the data, which they carried out using photographs that were taken of the PAMELA team's slides during the conference (abstract). You've got to feel for the PAMELA team but it's hard to keep a lid on really big breakthroughs."
