Most of the time I don't have the luxury of just getting out of the house/office and being, like many geeks, an introvert I am not becharmed with the idea of exercising in full view of *shudder* people. I definitely won't go to the gym until my body is a little more trimmed.
Do any Slashdotters have a regular workout routine that can be performed in the privacy of the home (don't say sex unless you are female, hot and offering) to stave off those lbs?
I regularly do press-ups (60 per night) and sit-ups (30 per night) and some fetching and carrying but that is all and these days it isn't enough. I need a solid and effective routine that will tone all my muscle groups efficiently. Are there any health-conscious Slashdotters out there?"

For all the advice I could give you, getting a workout partner is by far going to be the most effective.
This person should have similar goals as you do. You both are responsible for not letting the other slack off during a workout; and make sure you keep to the scheduled times.
Now for all that other advice:

My advice comes from personal experience; and the results I've seen from many of my friends.
whatever it is you have been doing, do twice as much.
after 30, it takes twice as much activity just to maintain
fitness as long as your calorie intake remains the same.
this is assuming, you were satisfied with your previous
level of fitness.
here's my way of increasing activity:
1. Stairs. no escalators/elevators.(16th floor office)
2. Park car in remote lot and walk in the rain.
3. Chase dogs outside. i have two. they love it.
