NoMoreCoal writes "http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/04/14/solar_electric_thermal/ has a story by Joe Romm, former undersecretary of energy during the Clinton administration and author of one of the best climate books, "Hell and High Water", on a technology that's ready to provide zero-carbon electric power big, fast, cheap, now: solar thermal power. Worth a read."

  • that so many are pushing PV and wind. Yet, it is geo-thermal AND solar thermal that hold the most potential. Solar thermal is actually ready now. geo-thermal can be engineered to be more efficient. The interesting idea is to combine these. Lots of place all over this planet that have temps in 60-80C. If you use that to push the initial temp up, followed by solar during sunny times or natural gas when not there, it would allow us to use a fraction of the gas and even collectors. This has a major benefit of w
    • I doubt the oil used in these towers after being heated to 700 degrees (doesn't say Celsius or Fahrenheit) that it's cooled temperature is below 60-80C. Plus geothermal rejects tons of waste heat into the environment. I'm not saying it's part not part of the solution, but it's not some magic cureall that can be used everywhere.

Solar-Thermal is one of the better tech solutions ready for market NOW. Plus it has high reliability, lower initial cost and longer life span then PV. But they drastically drop in p
