Submission + - Just Why Did Adobe Open-Source the Flash Player?

jg21 writes: Over at Web 2.0 Journal the question is being asked: why did Adobe wait till the Web 2.0 Summit to announce that it's giving the source code for the Flash Player's scripting engine to the Mozilla Foundation? The official answer is that Adobe is "seeking to accelerate the adoption of a standard language for creating engaging Web applications" (a reference to the ECMAScript 4th edition — ES4 — language specification). But surely the timing can only mean that Adobe, as has been has been suggested by at least one commentator, intends to move center stage in the Web 2.0 world, and turn itself from a "mere" $18BN company into a more like an Apple-sized, $63BN one. So, is Web 2.0 going to be powered by the Flash Player? And if so, will it run on the upcoming Apollo runtime from, guess who, Adobe?
