schwit1 (797399) writes "With the Triton Oxygen Respirator, it might be possible to breathe beneath the surface of the water as if you were a fish. Requiring no bulky tank to keep your lungs pumping properly, this invention of scuba diving equipment is much more ergonomic and organic in design.

The regulator comprises a plastic mouthpiece that requires you to simply bite down. There are two arms that branch out to the sides of the scuba mask that have been developed to function like the efficient gills of a marine creature. The scaly texture conceals small holes in the material where water is sucked into Jeabyun Yeon's Triton. Chambers inside separate the oxygen and release the liquid so that you can breath comfortably in the ocean."

  • If it works as described, you'll convulse if you dive to any significant depth.

Following some of the links in TFA, I think this is just some kind of concept art that got mistaken for an actual product. It talks about a "micro battery" that's several orders of magnitude better than "normal" (whatever that means) batteries, which is used to compress the oxygen into a storage tank (wtf?).

Plus have fun with oxygen toxicity after going deeper than a few meters. There's no way this could work as described at anything more than snorkel depth without being a serious danger to the user.
  • You can see the student's portfolio on his website: cargocollective.com/jeabyundesign/TRITON [cargocollective.com]. He probably got a good grade. The case looks nice, if not plausible. The design for the guts of the device is lacking. He got the biology wrong, divers don't want pure oxygen. They need a mixture of gasses. The machine would have to process a whole lot of water to get enough oxygen to support a human. This means a whole lot of water would have to continuously flow through the device. Moving that much water takes a

Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science.
