The Best Approach For Avoiding Zombies 15

BuzzSkyline writes "Last month, math students published a model of a zombie infestation that explained how the disease might spread. A new physics paper offers help for the more immediate problem — how to avoid being eaten. The paper, which recently appeared in the journal Physical Review E, considers where best to hide when being pursued by zombie-like predatory 'random walkers.' Although the researchers weren't thinking of zombies when they wrote the paper, the abstract describes the research as focusing on 'the survival probability of immobile targets annihilated by a population of random walkers.' (Sounds like a zombie movie premise to me.) The bottom line is you're better off the more labyrinth-like your hiding place is. So take a lesson from Dawn of the Dead, and hunker down in the mall, not in a farmhouse (as in Night of the Living Dead)."

The Best Approach for Avoiding Zombies

  • I honestly think a Whaling Ship would be the best possible place to hide. If you can secure the ship it is your best bet. Get far enough out to shore to avoid swimming zombies. You will need a few suplies other then defensive suplies first. Those being fishing equipment, gardening equipment, vegetable seeds of your choosing, and a distilation system. Then convert the ship's deck into a garden for food, and set up the distilation system processing the salt water into drinkable water. Then you have food, and
    • No, an Empty fully stocked with fuel and food cruise ship! Just go offshore a mile and drop anchor. Safe for at least a few years or the next Hurricane in which case by then all of the zombies have starved to death.

Safe until the zombies figure out how to walk across the ocean floor and climb up your anchor line, you mean.

        • Unlikely, given that:
          1. The zombies would have to first see your vessel from the shoreline and have the deductive powers to target it - without being able smelling your brains. Unless you're proposing random sea-floor walking zombies happen across your anchor, which I think would still take several years to occur by chance.
          2. Walking across the ocean floor would be extremely difficult (especially the first bit), given the oceanic currents at play even underwater. Not having air to breathe is not the onl
    • Nuclear aircraft carrier. Can outrun storms (or almost anything else for that matter) Mobile city. Unlimited nuclear power which lasts for years. Water from self-contained distillation plants. Plenty of anti-zombie firepower. Only limitations are spare parts, fuel for aircraft and backup generators, and food.

Actually, a high-tech modified zeppelin would be better, because you run the risk of your ship getting swarmed by zombie birds. Zeppelins can go much higher than birds can, but you might have to have a vegetarian diet. The zeppelin could divert the sunlight it receives into multiple growth decks, where the plants would sustain a small colony of people. You may wonder where the water comes from, but respiration actually generates water, so as long as you have a device that captures humidity and seal up the a

I would think a prison/jail would be the best defensive colony option. Give everyone the key to their cell, minimize group gathering. This way when on of the good guys turns into a zombie damage is minimized. The solid exterior doors, tall razor wire topped fences, guard towers, back up generators, air lock like entry systems, etc. are a nice bonus also.

How about an army base? You'd have most of those security measures, and lots more firepower to start killing each other when you go crazy.
    • Read The Walking Dead. Covered this, and the prison worked pretty well against zombies. Against humans on the other hand... Not so well.
  • Great, just great. I WAS planning on hiding out at the MALL, rather than my farm house, but since you've alerted every zombie who reads slashdot (and ALL zombies read slashdot), I'll be hiding out in my farmhouse.
