Claude Shannon was a great engineer and theorist. His seminal work, "The Mathematiccal Theory of Communication" created the field of information theory. Even though it was the first complete treatment of information theory, and is over fifty years old, it is still a good read for the mathematically inclined. You can obtain a reprint of this paper at the Bell labs website [bell-labs.com].
