Real Genius Now Available on DVD 30

While perusing the Onion today, I came across this review of Real Genius on DVD. No longer must we lower ourselves to watching crumbling VCR tapes of this movie copied off of Cinemax in the early 90s.

Science?: Real Genius Now Available on DVD

...wha? Yes, I know what Real Genius is about. An article about how accurate the science is in the film would maybe even qualify. I just don't think DVDs releases are terribly scientific. Unless you consider marketing a science.

Great flick. Funny as hell and a nice 80s soundtrack to boot...

"Self realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates who said....'I drank what?'"
  • This movie was one of the main reasons for me to go to university (apart from the novel "Doctor in the House" by Richard Gordon), and I still wait to wake up one morning having dreamt being pelted with gherkins by countless naked high-priestessess.

Okay, this is great! Now where the fuck is Weird Science on DVD? My original Blockbuster PVT is fading into dust.

What a shame. I googled around in hopes of finding some sort of extras but everywhere I looked they listed no extra features. Here's what Amazon had to say:

    Release Information:
    Studio: Columbia Tristar Hom
Theatrical Release Date: August 7, 1985
DVD Release Date: June 11, 2002
    Run Time: 106 minutes

    Edition Details:
Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only)
PLEASE NOTE: Some Region 1 DVDs may contain Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE). Some, but not all, of our international customers have had problems playing these enhanced discs on what are called "region-free" DVD players. For more information on RCE, click here.

    • I understand this release has two trailers and that's it (Bare-bones release, or rental)

Doesn't even the DEI initials hidden as an easter egg.
    • It's worse than that. The DVD contains two trailers... for other movies. There is nothing extra on this disk except: widescreen/pan-n-scan choice noticably better audio than my LD version
    • You know what no extras means... It means they are probably are going to release another two other cuts (I am probably dreaming on this) of this movie with extras features on each.

It almost appears that is what Movie Distributors are doing these days. They will take a popular movie release it to DVD with barely anything on it at $19.99 to $29.99. Then you will see retail stores start dropping the price. Eventually you see a special edition release then a director's cut then a criterion release etc etc...

Its all geared to make you blow money to buy a movie 3 to 4 times over. ....

Just look at Frank Herbert's Dune, the one released off Sci-Fi.

They just put out the Director's Cut with 30 minutes more material... Wooohooo and new packaging... *sigh*
